What ingredient in regular shampoo causes hair coloring to fade? I tried to compare some labels and I didn't get a clear idea. What is the active ingredient that keeps the color in the hair and protects it?
Does anyone know the difference between shampoo for color treated hair and regular shampoo?
Different shampoos have different ingredients. There isn't just ONE ingredient that will cause color to fade. The color-safe shampoos generally have a more gentle detergent or none at all. These shampoos prevent the cuticle of the hair from lifting and allowing the color to come out. The regular shampoos are usually a little more harsh and they lift the cuticle and the color fades.

I really don't know, but it's probably the chemicals and oils they add. Otherwise, the price!

There is no specific ingredient... Regular shampoo just washes the hair to harshly, causing the color to fade. Shampoo for color treated hair isnt as harsh, its more of a gentle wash for your hair which helps the color stay longer.

"Regular" shampoo has a lot more detergent in it than "color treated" shampoo. It's the detergent that fades the hair.
I've been a licensed cosmetologist for over thirty years.
Hope this helps.
