Ask a hairdresser or check the instructions on a packet of home dye. There are some dyes that are specially designed as a two-stage process to lighten, then colour, dark hair.

no not always it depends do you want it a real rich and deep red..if so just leave it dark and find a real dark red.

If you want to be a red head i suggest lightening it first and then go for the red it will come out better that way!! Trust me i know i've dyed my hair every color in the book!!!
